The first meeting of the Asheville Bible Study was truly encouraging. We arrived around 6:00 PM and started the setup process. The picnic area where we were meeting was in the back of the park and we quickly laid out the tents to set them up. After some initial confusion with tent assembly (ok, I'll be honest we weren't even close to eagle scout material) the tents were set up. We soon realized, however, that our location in the back of the park made it more difficult to find us so we sent out some of our intrepid helpers with some hastily made signs. You see three of them in the picture. Next meeting we hope to have some nice large printed signs to put out to direct people to our location.
At around 6:30 after we had got everything setup we walked around the park passing out literature and inviting people to the study. While most of the folks were engaged in other activities, we did manage to speak to a few people who indicated that they might join us at a future study. We're looking forward to meeting them again and getting to know them. Pray that God would work through this study and our efforts on His behalf.
By 7 PM we started the study. After singing some great songs and hymns, old and new, we had the study before ending in an encouraging time of corporate prayer. John led the study and gave an excellent overview of the book of Mark. As John taught, the book of Mark is designed to answer the question "Who is Jesus?" That is the focus of our studies, introducing people to Jesus through His Holy Word. He is truly "The beginning of the Gospel" (Mark 1:1), the beginning of the good news. As we will learn at our next study, He teaches truth "with authority" (verse 21) unlike the other teachers of his age or, for that matter, any age. This comes from His nature as God incarnated. If you would like to know more about what that message of authority is, come join us July 21 at 6:30 PM. We'd love to meet you there.
Here is a picture of (most) of the folks who were there (I am taking the picture). You can see one of our "professionally erected" tents in the background.

Keep praying that God would use us as "instruments of righteousness" in the Asheville area. See you Friday, July 21st at 6:30 PM!
